Worm Gear Winches
Worm gear winches have fewer moving parts than other designs and are known for their superior endurance and high reliability. The gear box of a Worm Gear Winch has two major parts, the worm and the main or bull gear. It is generally accepted in the industry that worm gear winches have a slower line speed and are less efficient than other designs. However, they are also generally self-braking, meaning that they stop when the driving worm gear stops and are extremely robust. Due to some new highly efficient gearing technology, there are some worm gear winches that have line speeds that are equal to their planetary counterparts for the same line pull.

Samurai 14500 (6577kg) Electric Winch with Steel Cable
We bought 3 of these winches and they are now installed....
Each lifting a roof shutter to let air into the house. They do the job very well.
I wondering about greasing them or any maintenance required.
I wanted a SAFE winch for lifting and lower heavy trunks on my log arch. That means lifting, holding, fixing an under trunk chain then gently lowering onto the chain to take the weight. No other winch I found could do this without the operator taking the strain while lowering, which is impractical if trying to do it oneself. This winch is super by quality, well painted and protected and you just crank the handle one way for up, it holds automatically, then wind the other way for down.
